Fatuma comes from a very dry, dusty town at the base of the Matthews Range Mountains in Northern Kenya. She is the third child of four, and both parents have passed away—a mother in child birth, and the father passed when Fatuma was very young. A kindly neighbor brought Fatuma to her home to help care for her children. Through all of this upheaval in her life, Fatuma worked very hard in primary school. Although she is Muslim, she attended the best school in her area, a Catholic Church Mission school.
On campus, Fatuma plays sports and enjoys basketball in particular. She is very involved in meeting parents, brothers, and sisters of other students when they visit campus. Fatuma describes school as “very busy, but very fun.”
When we met Fatuma, she was wrapped in a head scarf and had the most serene look in her face. She was so nervous, but you could tell that there was some serious personality there. That personality has just exploded since she became a student at Daraja Academy. She is outgoing and makes friends easily. Her huge smile and funny jokes keep all of the students and staff in stitches. She is such a joy to have at Daraja.
