BENEFITING: EXCEPTIONAL CARE FOR CHILDREN INC
As many of you know each year I gather up a group of wine-drinking runners to train for a Fall marathon while raising funds for a children's charity. I pick a different Marathon and a different charity each year... for 2016 I chose Exceptional Care for Children which wounded in 1998 by Jeannine S. Winsness, RN, MSN, CRNP. ECC began as a vision for an improved model of care for medically fragile children. Seeing the need for care that bridged the gap between traditional in-patient treatment and the difficulties of pediatric home care models, Jeannine set about raising the money to open Exceptional Care for Children. Through Jeannine’s perseverance, the concept grew to be an interagency private- public collaboration which includes A. I. DuPont Hospital for Children, Delaware Medicaid, Department of Health and Human Services Developmental Disabilities Division, Delaware Department of Education, ARC of Delaware and others. In the spring of 2004, after careful consideration, the Board of Directors approved a capital fundraising effort. It was with great good fortune that Exceptional Care for Children found both the facility of its dreams, and a generous benefactor, in very short order. Set within 7.7 tranquil acres, the existing facility was virtually perfect and lent itself well to being renovated into a homelike setting. In November of that year, ECC purchased its campus in Newark, Delaware. After raising more than $2.9 million for extensive renovations and working capital, Exceptional Care for Children opened its doors as one of the first facilities in the country to provide skilled nursing, transitional, and end-of-life care.
