EVENT: Dancing With Survivors
EVENT DATE: Oct 02, 2014
I dance in honor of my sister, Melinda.
My younger sister was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, so this is about her.
Melinda Sue had cystic breasts, so she ignored the large lump. She was devastated to hear it was stage 4. Melinda had a young child at the time of her diagnosis, and her family was greatly affected by her disease. As her cancer progressed, she was unable to do all the things she used to. Her husband took over those responsibilities.
This disease impacts the entire family. Melinda was not able to get financial help, and her husband had to sell his business to keep up with the financial demands. He took over the total care of their young daughter, Allie.
Melinda did all she could to survive; her fight was continuous. She had multiple surgeries that left her further debilitated and in a downward spiral. Her wish was to live until her daughter Allie graduated from high school. Allie was eight when she passed.
The last year of her life was one battle after another. Cancer took her away from her daughter and husband. Cancer took her away from me, her older sister, and another older sister, Janna, as well as her two brothers, Robert and Billy. Our parents are forever missing her.
I dance in in honor of my sister.
