BENEFITING: Freedom For Immigrants
Maria Ortiz Cortez is the mother of two young children who live in Salinas, California. They have graduations coming up soon and would love for her to be present. Maria is in immigration detention at the West County jail in Richmond. She has been incarcerated for over seventeen months, during which she has suffered sexual abuse and racial discrimination, as well as anxiety and depression caused by not knowing how much longer she will be locked up in a place that was never intended for prolonged detention. Despite this, she does not receive adequate mental health care there. Also while in ICE custody, Maria was in a car accident and not adequately treated for those injuries either. She has applied for a U visa (for victims of seriously harmful crime who have cooperated with law enforcement), but there is little chance it will be approved if she is not released from detention. All she wants is to be able to leave and support her children, but needs help paying her $5,000 immigration bond. Together, we can raise the money to reunite them!
