COMMUNITY INITIATIVES FOR VISITING IMMIGRANTS IN CONFINEMENT wrote -
Maria Ortiz Cortez is the mother of two young children who live in Salinas, California. They have graduations coming up soon, and would love for her to be present. Maria is currently detained at the West County Detention Facility in Richmond. She has been confined in immigration detention for over seventeen months. She was previously detained at Yuba County Jail, where she experienced sexual abuse, and was transferred when she filed a report. Also while in ICE custody, Maria was injured in a car accident and not adequately treated. She continues to suffer daily from the anxiety and depression caused by not knowing how much longer she will be locked up in a place that was never intended for prolonged detention, but does not receive adequate mental health care. All she wants is to be able to leave and support her children, but has no means of paying her $5,000 immigration bond. Together, we can raise the money to reunite them!
