BENEFITING: Free To Run Inc.
EVENT DATE: May 08, 2016
I am running the Colchester 10k for Free to Run - because everyone deserves the freedom to run, play and experience the outdoors, and they make that happen for women and girls in conflict.
Running is not that big a deal for many people. Competing in races has become quite a common form of personal challenge, be it marathons, biathlons etc. Not every can though.
WHY I AM DOING THIS:
Since I broke my foot in August 2014, I have not been able to run for the last one and a half years. I could not even walk for long, fast, or much at all for that matter. For the first time in one and a half years, I can run. Yes, I can run!
I thought, why not challenge myself to a race that I can work towards, and build my fitness, strength and confidence again. But why should it end at a personal challenge (and hopefully achievement) though?
On 8 May 2016, I will run the Colchester 10k for Free to Run, to raise funds for women and girls who face way more challenging circumstances that hinder their freedom to movement.
If I thought it was a challenge to get back on my feet again, at least it was only temporary.
If I thought it was a challenge to run a distance like that again, at least it is a choice that I can make.
I am now free to run (cheers to an amazing orthopaedic surgeon and encouragement from people around me), but others face much greater obstacles such as discrimination, traditional cultural beliefs, restrictive gender norms, lack of resources, and lack of security.
Free to Run uses running, physical fitness and outdoor adventure to empower and educate females from conflict-affected communities, by creating and supporting an environment for women and girls to participate in sport.
Help me help them.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
I hope you can donate $1 for every km I am going to run, or $10 (assuming you believe I can complete this!).
If you can donate more, even better! If you cannot, that's fine too. Perhaps you can help to spread the word?
*Full disclosure: I am not taking a single penny from this. I am paying for my own registration fees and everything from this fundraiser goes to Free to Run, to be used in whatever way they deem appropriate.
