FREE ARTS FOR ABUSED CHILDREN OF MINNESOTA wrote -
Free Arts Minnesota works with youth in challenging circumstances to support artistic and personal development through a unique combination of mentorship and arts learning.
Free Arts Minnesota strengthens communities by…
- Partnering with social service agencies, community organizations, and local artists
- Engaging underserved youth with the arts allowing creativity to drive learning
- Building positive mentoring relationships
- Expanding arts programming to under-resourced neighborhoods
A FORCE FOR GOOD
We work with youth who need our services the most, those who have experienced the trauma and stress of poverty, domestic or sexual violence, debilitating mental health issues, and addiction. Free Arts provides a recess, a safe space for expression and self-discovery.
We bring caring adult volunteers into our partner sites to work alongside youth while engaging in art projects. Providing a safe, supportive, and consistent experience goes a long way to helping our youth build trusting and positive relationships.
And what about the art? Through our programs, youth get to experience all forms of art—performance, music, poetry, visual—with the art projects serving as a vehicle to process tough issues and complex emotions. When our youth reflect on their art, we get snippets of insight into their circumstances. As this continues to happen over time, our youth feel more comfortable with creative expression and gain confidence in their skills.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
Nearly 140,000 youth live at or near the poverty level in the Twin Cities, with 4,000 youth experiencing homelessness on any given day. Add mental health issues to the mix and there are 9% of school-age children and 5% of preschool children with serious emotional challenges. Most alarming is that 50% of our youth do not have access to out-of-school enrichment activities nor a connection to a caring adult in their life.
This is where Free Arts comes in. We provide an opportunity for youth to share their voice through the arts and we amplify their voices to inform our community about the issues our youth are facing and the magnitude of the problem. But we can’t do it alone.
PARTNERSHIP AND COLLABORATION
Free Arts serves as a valuable adjunct program to our partner sites, such as shelters, treatment facilities, and child development centers. We intentionally customize our arts programming to fit their overall goals. This focused approach allows us to further support our partners’ work and provide youth with much needed access to the arts and caring adults.
There is no cost to youth to participate in Free Arts programming. We rely on volunteers, donors and supporters to reach nearly 2,000 youth at 25+ partner sites each year.
