Freedom Summer 2016
Organized by: Sandra Bass
Hard to believe that 50 years after the Selma to Montgomery march helped secure passage of the Voting Rights Act we are back in the battle to secure the vote for all again.
In 2013 the Voting Rights Act was significantly weakened and since then several states have passed voting rights restrictions.
North Carolina, a state that will be pivotal in the upcoming Presidential election has passed several restrictions including:
- Eliminating same day registration
- Instituting a Photo ID law
- Reducing the early voting period
These funds will support sending U.C. Berkeley Public Service Center students to North Carolina to work side by side with leading nonprofit organizations in nonpartisan voter education and engagment activities in North Carolina. The 2016 election is critical. Let's be sure all of our votes count by supporting Berkeley students to get out the vote in North Carolina!
