THE STORY:

Freedom Elementary opened in 2003 and was named in honor of the events of 9-11. At that time, the school was equipped with a fully functioning television studio to enhance the children's education and give them a chance to broadcast morning announcements. Since that time, due to budget cuts and other necessary spending, the school's TV studio has remained the same. Now, the students are forced to work with equipment that is broken or uses outdated technology. We are asking for support to help save the studio at Freedom Elementary so that the children can continue to explore new ways of thinking and learning. Freedom Elementary is comprised of a wide variety of students. Over 49% of the 811 students at Freedom Elementary qualify for free or reduced lunch. 10.6% of the student body speak English as a second language. Almost half the children that attend the school are part of a minority group, and among the students that Freedom services are migrant and homeless children. With limited resources from both budgets and family contributions, we are seeking outside help to fund our TV studio upgrades. The television studio enhances the education of all the students at Freedom Elementary. 5th graders make up the production team and anchors, but other children are able to participate in the morning program. To become a member of the crew, students are required to submit an application and essay stating why they would be an asset to the TV crew. Our studio is in need of new video cameras, microphones, a soundboard, lighting, mixer, monitors, and to just be updated to digital. Our vision for the studio is to incorporate advancing technologies such as green screens, video editing software, digital televisions, remote broadcasting capabilities, as well as other technologically up to date ideas and equipment. Please, help us fund our project so we can create an atmosphere of learning and creativity in an updated studio.
