Ainsley's Angels is thrilled to help ensure Marie can soon roll with the wind in her very own freedom push chair! With your generosity, we are certain this can happen soon. We know the positive energy surrounding the start line as we prepare to be included and "roll with the wind", and the normalcy of the family, is a therapy like no other.
Here is a note from Marie's grand-daughter:
My grandma Marie is our family's rock. She is the sun and the moon. This woman has the kindest heart and the most beautiful soul. And last summer this angel was almost taken from us. She went in for a minor procedure to have a blood clot in her leg cleared, but something went wrong and she started bleeding internally... the bleeding wouldn't stop. The doctors did everything they could.
One amazing man physically held pressure on the wound all through the night in order to stop the bleeding. Her leg started to change color. Things didn't look good. They finally made the choice, life over limb. My grandma lost her right leg, but somehow she gained an even sunnier disposition. The brush with death made her smile bigger, hug tighter, love even sweeter. Her leg became infected. They had to bring her in and amputate it higher up. She continued to shine brighter.
After her final amputation she remained in the hospital for quite some time. She needed extra care in order to heal properly. She just wanted to be home where her garden was and her family, but after her stay at the hospital she still needed constant care, so she took residence at a nursing home just blocks away from her home that she missed so badly. She is strong willed though and did everything she could to get strong enough to leave the nursing home, but Winter rolled in. She had to move into an assisted living across town, but she was determined to get home. Spring bloomed and so did her determination. She finally went home. Home has been sweet for her, but at 89 and with a prosthetic leg, home isn't what it used to be. With her current wheelchair it is not easy for her to get outside to enjoy the things that once brought her so much pleasure. Recently my grandma and I went on an adventure to a nature center. 2.5 miles of sun and trees, birds and a cool breeze. It was obvious how much joy and excitement it brought to her. I would go on adventures with her every day if I could, but her wheelchair makes it a struggle.
Marie has 7 children, 30+ grand, great and great-great grandchildren. Between all of us we are out on the trails, biking, running 5ks, or walking for our Relay For Life team every day. Grandma has found comfort being home, but from her most recent adventure you can see just how much being outdoors and being active improved everything. With a Freedom Pushchair we could rally around our grandma, like we have all our lives and take her on countless adventures to let that breeze blow all her cares away.
