New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television launched the Freedom Satellite for China (FSC) plan in September 2008, with the goal of raising funds to rent or purchase satellite capacities so that the “window of information freedom” can be kept open in China. Our goal is to secure transmission of independent television and radio services to China, without political interference.
A GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit) satellite is needed to transmit direct to home (DTH) TV or radio signals. Depending on the specifications and configurations, a satellite can have many transponders. Each transponder can be configured to cover different geographic areas, with the capacity to carry multiple TV and radio services.
In the first phase of FSC, we aim to resume and maintain the broadcast of NTD over Mainland China. The immediate goal is to rent satellite channels to guarantee the basic broadcast of NTD over Mainland China. The yearly expenses are estimated to be $2,000,000 of which $1.2M will be used to sustain basic broadcasting coverage into China and $800K will be used to increase bandwidth to resist interference.
Starting in 2013, we’ll start the second phase of FSC in which we aim to raise $6 million annually to rent 2 transponders. We need a total of two transponders on two different satellites in order to ensure complete coverage of China. The market price for a transponder is US $3 million annually and the minimum contract term is 5 years, a total of $30 million for 2 transponders. This will create a satellite platform that has the capacity to carry 10-20 TV networks and 20-35 radio networks. We welcome other independent media to join this platform.
Ultimately, Freedom Satellite Plan aims to raise enough funds to purchase its own satellite.
