I'm honored to support a groundbreaking new national organization, FreeFrom. They are competing for a $100,000 cash prize and need your help!
Without a way to rebuild financially, survivors typically won't leave an abuser. If they do, they risk homelessness, losing custody of their children, or having to return to their abuser. Often, survivors will visit shelters several times but never actually be able to afford to leave for good or build safe lives for themselves and their children.
That's where FreeFrom comes in. They're looking past crisis intervention to violence prevention, by helping survivors achieve financial stability so that they can leave and never have to go back. This is how we will break the cycle of violence against women in the US.
From September 28th - October 25th, they are participating in the Allstate Foundation's Purple Purse campaign, a fundraising challenge that is exclusively open to domestic violence organizations. The organization that raises the most money through Crowdrise during this 4 week challenge will win $100,000.
Here's what they would do with the money if they won:
1. Launch their national civil legal program that will, for the very first time, provide survivors with the opportunity to hold their abusers financially accountable. Domestic violence costs $8.3Bn annually, and survivors bear the brunt of this burden. It's time to put the responsibility back on the abuser.
2. Launch their entrepreneurship program in four cities, to help survivors to start their own small businesses. They'll offer business plan consulting, marketing training, mentorship, counseling, branding, legal services, and seed funding to help survivors get their businesses off the ground and to a point of self-sufficiency.
Help unleash the potential that survivors have not just to survive, but to thrive.
