Free Textile Arts Workshops for Children at BPL
Organized by: Chloe, Lilly, and Evan Exploration Project
As I have been getting ready to be Bat Mitzvahed later this year, I have been thinking a lot about social justice. An important lesson I have learned from my Torah portion, is not to favor one child over another, just because he or she has something that others don't, whether it is wealth, opportunity, skills, knowledge, etc.
I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to create art with textiles for five years at the Textile Arts Center, and it has positively influenced my life in more ways than I can count. Children having access to the arts is something that is very important to me. This is why I’ve decided to create a series of free workshops to expose more children to the arts. My goal with these workshops is to give children the same, great opportunity and experience I have been lucky enough to have.
Arts education has been on the decline in urban public schools for more than a generation and these workshops will allow children to experience the excitement of textile arts education.
I have enlisted support from my friends at the Textile Arts Center and approached the Brooklyn Public Library to be the host for these workshops. The workshops will be led by teachers from the Textile Arts Center (TAC).
The three workshops will include:
1) Basket Weaving - Students will learn about the history of basket weaving, experiment with different basket weaving materials and go home with their own finished baskets.
2) Dyeing - Students will learn different natural dye techniques and go home with their own custom indigo-ombre-dyed T-shirts and multiple fabric swatches.
3) Screen and Block Printing - Students will learn screen printing, block printing, and stamp making techniques, all while illustrating their own story or scene on fabric.
The funds raised from this campaign will go towards materials and teachers for these workshops.
I would appreciate any donations you can give in support of my goal to raise $1,000. Please feel free to spread the word and thank you so much!
