joe awesome: Way back one winter in the late (18)90's, while Henry and Clara Ford took their first ride in what was then known as the "Quadracycle", they struck and killed a young man riding a bicycle.
While nameless, and with remains inextricable from the mangled bicycle frame, his remains were interred on the spot by a hasty Henry, eager to cover up the incident to protect the reputation of his yet-unproven machine.
When a passing friar noted his burial rites, Henry lied and claimed he was merely burying the family dog. The friar, being weary from carrying his final headstone of the day, gave his condolences and gifted the burial site with a blank headstone, and all parties went on their way.
As Henry found himself drawn towards piloting his inventions along the same path, he passed that headstone daily. On the most bitter of days, he could almost see the young man and his bicycle in the fog, snow, or shadows.
Almost a year to the day later, he noticed that there was an inscription he had not noticed in all of his previous passings of the stone.
Stopping his machine and disembarking to read the stone, he found the following inscription
"Here Lies Joe
as mythic as he was rare
as celestial as he was celestine
as polynomial as he was polymathematic
as surreal as he was serious
as imaginary as he was real
as unbelievable as he is believable
joe is going the distance
joe's love for me has just got to be real
joe doesn't usually do this, but break it on down for the remix
joe's in the kitchen and the oven on the fritz
today's joe awesome- mean, mean, stride
today's joe awesome- mean, mean, pride.
more human than human
more human than human."
Joe is a co-founder of The Hub of Detroit bike shop, a member of the Back Alley Bikes collective and OmniCorpDetroit, and a force to be reckoned with in the winter time.
