THE STORY:

The Northcoast Regional Land Trust is raising funds for the design and implementation of the Freshwater Farm's Reserve (FWFR) Nature Trail. We are looking to our friends and members to help raise $5,000.

Consider donating today and you could be entered to win prizes such as MacBooks and more. Click here to view prizes.

Here is some project background:

In 2005, the Land Trust purchased 54 acres of bottomland pasture from neighboring Freshwater Farms Nursery to facilitate a wetland restoration and enhancement project and to maintain the agricultural uses of the property.

In 2012, NRLT acquired the 20-acre nursery property, reuniting it with the 54 acre FWFR. An interpretive public access trail at the Freshwater Farms Reserve will be an important access point for visitors to enjoy the native flora, fauna, and picturesque landscapes of the Humboldt Bay estuary system for non-motorized sports. The trail will be situated between Freshwater Slough and Wood Creek, with majestic views of both watersheds and expansive vistas of the Humboldt Bay Bottomlands.

The Freshwater Nature trail will provide education on the history, ecology, and socioeconomic relevance of the Freshwater Farms Reserve and the greater Humboldt Bay estuary system to the healthy and sustainable development of the region through interpretive signs, educational kiosks, and a viewing platform. A floating boat dock will also be installed.

The Northcoast Regional Land Trust seeks to connect people to their natural surroundings, transform cultural relationships to the land, and ensure for enduring resource protection by Building Community for Conservation. We achieve these goals by promoting naturalist-led, recreation events, hands-on, and ecosystem education for high school students. The proposed Freshwater Nature Trail around the Reserve will play a significant role in our efforts to build community for conservation by promoting appreciation for private coastal land and wildlife habitat along the Pacific Flyway on California’s northernmost coast.
