Freshwater Wordsmiths Fundraiser
Organized by: Justin Rogers
WHO ARE WE: Freshwater Wordsmiths is a Detroit Artists Organization putting on monthly open mic shows, coaching a yearly poetry slam team that represents the city on a national scale, collaborating with other arts organizations in the city for special projects, and is the umbrella organization developing the Michigan Metaphorical Melee - a Michigan-wide poetry festival. Freshwater Wordsmiths is a black owned organization committed to the development of the arts and the strengthening of the arts community in Detroit.
OVERVIEW: From March to July we are raising funds for our 2016 Detroit Poetry Slam Team!!!!! This is a 4 member team of performance poets traveling to Atlanta, GA in August to compete against 71 other teams from around the country. This competition is the legendary National Poetry Slam(NATS). Over the next several months, teams across the nation will be performing around their regions to raise funds for registration, travel, and lodging - our team is no different! Our slam Team is funded COMPLETELY by the work of our poets and the donations of their communities. We hope that you donate a little OR a lot to contribute to these phenomenal poets's journey. Every dollar helps!
MEET THE TEAM: Ajanae Dawkins is a University of Madison student and a First Wave scholar currently studying briefly in Morocco. Jassmine Parks is a writer, spoken word artist, activist, and above all a CONQUEROR! Jassmine’s poetry reflects her life’s principles: transparency, authenticity and vulnerability. She looks to show the audience who she is in totality. This is Jassmine's second year in a row on Freshwater's slam team, and she is excited to bond with new poets while advancing her art to new levels. PEACE is a local poet who, on a challenge, stepped out to participate in her first poetry slam, and won 1st place in 2008. Shortly after, she entered the Detroit "Bring It"Talent Competition and again won 1st place in the category of Spoken Word,Rap and Comedy. PEACE was an intricate part of former Councilman Kwame Kenyatta's 40 school "Pride Tour" & the "Cease Fire" Initiative spearheaded by radio personality Reggie Reggie Davis.
WHY WE NEED THE FUNDS: Registration for NATS is a $500 cost. Lodging in Atlanta for a team of 5 and 2 coaches is estimated to cost $900 for one large hotel room Travel to and from Atlanta is estimated at $1500 ***The team is actively fundraising in other ways outside of this online fundraiser. The funds raised here will be applied primarily to travel, and the difference will be made up by team shows and other community sponsorship/donations***
