THE STORY:

OUR GOAL IS TO BUILD A NEW GIRLS DORM IN 2017!  PLEASE HELP BY DONATING TODAY - #GIVINGTUESDAY  #GIVINGTOWER

We've come a long way.... We have a ways to go! Won’t you please help us!

Friends of John Paul is a 501c (3) charity that supports the John Paul Secondary School in Chelekura, Uganda. The Mission of John Paul Secondary School, a Catholic institution, is to foster spiritual, intellectual, physical, moral, and cultural growth of its students through hard work and mutual respect.

For 2017 we need your help for our next major project.  As the school continues to grow, the need for student housing also grows.  Our current dorm is bursting with our female boarding students.   Currently we have 200 students most of whom are girls. The reason for this is that the one dorm we currently have houses only girls.---and it is filled to overflowing ! We would like to build a new dorm to house a larger student body of girls.   These children want to learn and study so that they can have a better life -- and we want to help them achieve this goal!  To learn more about JPSS and our story please continue to read below!

In 2005 when we first heard the story, we knew Chelekura was remote and small before we visited for the first time, but we had no idea. There were a dozen buildings clustered loosely together interspersed with homes of mud with thatch roofs. No water, no electricity, just shelter. In fact the first school was a tree. A teacher with a blackboard and children sitting in the shade.

When we founded John Paul Secondary School, the landscape changed. This was a modern nine classroom building with the capacity to teach 400 students.  From those humble beginnings in 2007 when we opened the doors for the first time to 14 eager, wide-eyed students and 10 teachers, we have exploded. Since then we have added a girl's dorm, a kitchen, a large Science and Learning Center that houses separate labs for physics, biology, chemistry, a library and a computer center.

We were finally able to successful drill for water in 2015 after many attempts in the last 8 years.  Our well provides clean water for the school and surrounding community.  This has been a life changing event for the school and the village of Chelekura.

In 2016, we installed powerful solar electric system to the Science Center to bring power and light to the school for the first time.   Our newest class will be computer sciences.  Computers will be ready for when the students return to school in February.  Also in 2016 we raised the funds through our Brick-By-Brick Crowdrise campaign to start development of  Teacher Housing.  We strive to hire the best teachers available.  In order to keep the teachers of the highest quality there was a need for housing.  Our goal was reached and a ground breaking ceremony took place in August 2016.  We hope to have the housing completed in early 2017.
