Meredith, Michael, and I will be running/ walking to support August James, a wonderful little boy who happened to be born with 47 chromosomes instead of 46. August is the little brother of Everett and Finnley, Meredith and Michael's lifelong partners in crime. (If Meredith and Michael have a GOOD story to tell, without a doubt, it involves Ev and Finn.) Mer and Auggs share a love of music and dance and Michael treats him like a little bother (and, no, that wasn't a typo). Auggs is special to them because he is Auggs - not because he has special needs.
Like, Meredith and Michael, all of us are supportive of differences - it adds to depth and breadth of life. However, not all differences are supported, particularly in the classroom. Most of leading research for Downs Syndrome education is being conducted in the UK. The organization comes to the US annually. And, Auggs' parents, Catherine and Howie, would like to bring a conference to St. Mary's County. Meredith, Michael, and I really want to help make this happen. And, if you do to, well, that would be fabulous . . .
