Supporting Moms & Babies

Friends of NYC Nurse-Family Partnership supports our city's NFP program, the most effective and widely acclaimed maternal and early childhood intervention in the country.

Breaking the cycle of poverty begins with healthy pregnancies and caring, responsible parenting in the earliest years of a child’s life—the period when intervention makes the most difference.  Babies born into high-stress environments to vulnerable mothers face threats to their safety, brain development, and even their chances of staying alive.

Nurse-Family Partnership combats poor outcomes for young children by providing registered nurses to make regular home visits to low income mothers from early in their pregnancies until their babies are age two. The nurses offer information, guidance, support and encouragement—and the results are life changing for both mothers and babies.

NFP is a nationwide model and the gold standard of early intervention programs. There are over 31,000 families enrolled in 43 states and results—supported by randomized controlled trials—are dramatic:

  • A 56% reduction in children’s ER visits for accidents and poisonings
  • A 48% reduction in child abuse and neglect
  • A 50% reduction in language delays in children at age 21 months
  • A 67% reduction in behavioral/ intellectual problems at age six
  • An 82% increase in months employed for mothers
  • 60% fewer arrests of the mother up to 15 years after childbirth

NFP in New York City

In New York City, more than 100 nurses serve over 1,800 mothers through seven different agencies—at least one in each borough. While the core program is supported by government grants, more resources are needed and that is where the Friends of New York City Nurse-Family Partnership comes in.

What We Do

Friends of NYC NFP is an independent nonprofit that raises money for goods, services and supplemental programming that help mothers more easily meet NFP's goals: a healthy pregnancy, caring and dependable parenting, and maternal self-sufficiency.
