THE STORY:

Riverside Park is a lovely wooded 18 acre park, complete with an amphitheater surrounded by daffodils, tulips and many other colorful flowers and is located on the Thames River in New London, Ct.

Riverside Park has provided generations of New Londoners with a place to view the oldest collegiate competition in America, the Yale-Harvard Races, to have a family picnic, swim, fish, hike and observe the various birds and other wildlife abundant in the park.

If it's solitude you want or need, you'll find that here at Riverside Park with plenty of shade trees to relax under as you enjoy the magnificent view of the Thames River from almost any area of the park.

There is, however, one small but persistent problem regarding Riverside Park.

The New London City Council, in a 4-3 vote, has proposed selling this gem to the Coast Guard Academy and, as always been the case, the Academy wants it.

Riverside Park is the only park in the northern end of the city of New London, specifically referred to as East New London, and, in addition to the many fine homes in the area, is also the location of three low-income housing developments.

If the New London City Council is allowed to sell Riverside Park, residents of East New London, especially those without transportation, will then have to make an almost two mile hike to the only other free beach in this shoreline city - Green Harbor Beach which is frequently closed due to pollution.

There are a number of reasons not to sell this park, one being that parks can increase property values up to 20 percent and another, obviously, that in a densely populated area such as East New London, the need for a park such as Riverside becomes doubly important.

Please join with the many residents of New London and beyond who believe in the need for parks such as Riverside especially in today's world.
