Join Team FOTA! Team FOTA is running to raise funds for rescue dogs who are going through heartworm treatment, dogs who can't run.  Friends of the Animals Baton Rouge (FOTA) is an animal rescue organization, pulling dogs and puppies from the shelter and placing them in the homes of foster volunteers until they are adopted. FOTA’s mission is to rescue, re-home, or otherwise save as many dogs and puppies from euthanasia at the municipal shelter and in the parish of East Baton Rouge. Since 2010, more than 1,000 dogs have been rescued through FOTA.

In June 2013, FOTA received a grant from Pennington Family Foundation, and their dream of opening The Dog Adoption House became reality. Located on Highland Road and open daily, the House gives dogs a relaxed environment where they are able to show their true personality, helping them to get adopted sooner. Volunteers help to socialize the dogs and make sure they get plenty of playtime throughout the day. The House is thought of as a doggie-daycare - foster parents drop their dogs off for the day to play and the dogs go back to their families after a fun day away. When foster dogs do not fill all of the available spaces, those spaces are open to shelter dogs so that they can also get a day of play and fun. The Adoption House is the perfect place for adoptees to come and meet FOTA dogs waiting to find their forever homes.

So why raise join Team FOTA?
Once FOTA rescues a dog from the shelter and places the dog in a foster home FOTA becomes responsible for all vet expenses for the dogs and puppies. Team FOTA is running the Louisiana Marathon to raise funds to treat heartworm positive dogs... the dog's who are going through treatment and can't run.

FOTA has found that approximately 70% of Baton Rouge shelter dogs are heartworm positive because of the high prevalence of this disease in the south. A majority of those dogs are being euthanized. A dog who’s not receiving monthly heartworm prevention can become heartworm positive by one mosquito bite. With the infestation of mosquitoes in this hot, humid climate, Louisiana dogs have a much higher risk of being infected.

In 2013, 20% of FOTA’s rescued dogs were heartworm positive. A fourth of FOTA’s dogs have been heartworm positive since the beginning of January, 2014. A heartworm positive dog has a different treatment plan. In 2013, FOTA spent more than $50,000 in medical expenses to treat dogs they had pulled that were heartworm positive and required heartworm treatment. And that’s using a low-cost spay and neuter clinic to treat the dogs.

Raise funds for Team FOTA and run for the dogs who can’t run. Thanks for considering FOTA as your charity to run for!
