Our Mission

Caring for Boston's First Public Parks Since 1970

The Friends of the Public Garden, a parks advocacy organization founded in 1970, has a mission to preserve, protect and enhance Boston's first three public parks: the Boston Common, the Public Garden and the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, in partnership with the City of Boston Parks Department. Did you know that the Boston Common is the country's first public park? Or that the Boston Public Garden is the country's first public botanical garden?

The Friends encourages citizen advocacy, conducts improvement projects, sponsors educational programs and family events in the parks, and provides much needed financial support for tree care, bench replacement, monument conservation, and fountain restoration and maintenance, ensuring that the critical natural and structural features of these parks receive the vital care that they need.

Beyond our annual stewardship work in the parks, we are now in the midst of a $4 million improvement project on the Boston Common to renovate the Brewer Fountain Plaza and Parkland stretching from Tremont Street up to the Shaw memorial, the front lawn of our State House. This is the most ambitious project in our 43-year history and is dramatically transforming the most neglected, yet most heavily used, corner of the Common into one of the most striking public spaces in the city. The new granite plaza around the beautiful 150 year-old Brewer Fountain is now adorned with cafe tables, chairs and umbrellas. Piano music is played at lunchtime and food is available from a high-end food truck. Thirty-two new trees, new grass, curbs, and paths have revitalized the Liberty Mall (up the hill to the Shaw memorial) and created a lush parkland oasis perfect for relaxing and escaping the bustling city.

Whether these parks are a place to enjoy with your family and friends, a pathway through which you commute to work each day, or a place of respite, we hope you will consider joining us in supporting this green heritage. Learn more at
