THE STORY:

We are Friends of Udayan Care who are extremely passionate and proud of the work that Udayan Care does in India for orphanaged children and ambitious, talented, young, improverished girls. Udayan Care has been serving India for the last 20 years and we are kicking off the next 20 years with lauching an awareness building campaign in the United States.

The mission of Udayan Care India is to "provide a nurturing home for every orphaned child; an opportunity for higher education for every girl and for every adult, the dignity of self-reliance and the desire to give back to society."

The stark reality of millions of children in India is that over 30 million children orphaned in India while about 18 million children live or work on the streets in India.  The education system sees 96% of girls enrolled in primary school but out of every 100 girls, only 1 reaches the secondary level.  Only 4.5% university graduates are women.

This year alone Udayan Care will touch the lives of 3,500 children via its Udayan Ghar and Udayan Shalini Fellowship programs, both catering to long term care and protection.

Udayan Ghars (Sunshine Homes) are orphanages that nurture orphaned children in the warmth of a family.  Through a strategy called L.I.F.E- Living In Family Environment - this ‘Group Foster Care’ model ensures a small number of children, (about 10-12) live together like  a family,  and are loved and cared for by a group of Mentor Parents - socially committed individuals (volunteers), who groom the children with a team of social workers, care givers and supervisors. All children are brought up in middle-class neighborhoods and attend English-medium private schools. Since all the children come from a traumatized past, Udayan Care believes that emotional/mental support is critical to the lives of these children, thus has a very effective mental health programme in-built into its system. Children are taken care of till they finish their education, get economic independence and become productive citizens of society.

So far Udayan Ghars have nurtured and groomed more than 300 children with love and protection for long-term in its 13 Homes, across 4 states of India: Delhi, Haryamna, UP, and Rajasthan. Presently, there are 185 children across all homes.

To sponsor one child for an entire year - $1,100. To sponsor an entire home of 12 children - $13,200.

Udayan Shalini Fellowship is a six-year program operating in 8 cities of India, that provides higher education to develop poor girls into dignified, independent young women. Shalini means a dignified, empowered woman. Girls are chosen based on a Need, Ambition, and Talent model, which takes adolescent girls, who come from families making less than $2,000 per year and show the academic drive to get out of their cycle of poverty.  They are supported by mentors and are required to attend leadership development workshops.  With a success rate of 95.5 percent, the fellows graduate in fields of their choice and get into high paying jobs and become agents of change not only for their own families but also for their communities, as each one of them is groomed by Udayan Care into giving back to society.

UDAYAN SHALINI: To sponsor one girl for six years - $2,200.

With the impact Udayan Care has shown, along with its transparency, in 2011, Udayan Care won the India NGO of the Year Award, awarded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Resource Alliance.

We, as Udayan Care USA, are reaching out to you today to both inform you of this wonderful organization and to suggest, if you are considering where to make that deeply valuable donation, to consider Udayan Care. We, along with the staff/volunteers, and especially the children, would be so grateful if you might consider donating to us.

Udayan Ghars are orphanages that nurture orphaned children in the warmth of a family.  Currently, numbering 13, the children are cared for and loved by mentor mothers throughout their school years. All children are brought up in middle-class neighborhoods and all attend English-medium private schools.  As can be expected, some children suffer some emotional setbacks based on their past.  Udayan Care believes emotional/mental support is critical to the lives of these children, thus have a mental health professional on staff.
