Help me get to UNIFAT!

30 years ago, Abitimo Rebecca Odongkara planted a seed called UNIFAT school in Amuru, Northern Uganda. Today, her granddaughter wants to return to Uganda to help this seed continue to grow! Help fund this mission to send her to Uganda to continue what her grandmother started!

Founded in 1983 by Abitimo Rebecca Odongkara, the Upper Nile Institute For Appropriate Technology (UNIFAT) Primary School, is a primary school located in Gulu, Uganda, East Africa.

UNIFAT started under a tree with only a few students and no books and materials. But despite these humble beginnings, one goal remained: teaching children through love and understanding. Today, UNIFAT Primary School is a K-8 school with over 1,000 students.

What makes UNIFAT Unique

As one of the top performing schools in the region, UNIFAT is known for academic excellence. But UNIFAT's mission of "learning through love and understanding" has made it stand out amongst the crowd as a center for healing and love for the Gulu community. UNIFAT provides scholarships for a significant number of underprivileged children who have been devasted by calamities that have affected the region, most notably the war in Northern Uganda from 1985 to 2006, and HIV-AIDS. In addition, the school offers counseling seminars to the surrounding community in an effort to encourage emotional healing for the people of Northern Uganda.

Who is Friends of UNIFAT?

Friends of UNIFAT Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that promotes Mrs. Odongkara's mission of "learning through love and understanding," and supports the school she started in Uganda. Founded in 2005, we are an entirely volunteer board made up of friends, supporters and relatives of Mrs. Odongkara. Our mission is to support the school by raising awareness in the United States and assist the school in improving its facilities so that it may continue to provide an outstanding education for the children of Northern Uganda.

What's this mission all about?

In order to help take UNIFAT to the next level, we want to send board member and granddaughter of Mrs. Odongkara, Chioma Azi, to Uganda to assist school administrators in developing management systems at the school. Our goal is to help train UNIFAT teachers, administrators and board members on various management, financial and strategic planning skills, so that UNIFAT can be even better equipped to educate the next generation of leaders.

Chioma will spend approximately two months helping the school in a variety of areas, including developing and implementing policy, training programs, and systems that will help improve the school's overall functions. Funds raised for of our mission will be used to cover airfare to Uganda, living expenses and the costs of implementing these programs, including hiring local Northern Ugandans as consultants to assist with this mission. Our goal is to raise $6,000 dollars for this mission.

You may be asking yourself, why do you need to fly someone all the way to Uganda? Why can't the people there help themselves? Well, the answer to this question is based simply on the idea that many hands make light work. In other words, we believe a team approach is the best way to help UNIFAT achieve its goals, and this mission is simply the first step to help UNIFAT become even more self-sufficient.

We want to help guide UNIFAT, but we also want to support the the community by consulting with and hiring the people who know and understand the needs of the school best: Northern Ugandans.

By donating to our cause, you will instantly lend a hand to the work that needs to be done in Northern Uganda, just by clicking a button. Team work was never so easy!
