BENEFITING: A BETTER LIFE FOR KIDS
When the Ghanaian government announced they were unilaterally closing down orphanages in August of 2016, A Better Life for Kids responded with the Homes for Kids Campaign. Our donors came alongside us to help us raise funding to build and transition kids into the more favorable family home model. The government approved this plan and gave us time to raise funding, and the children at our orphanage were spared a great deal of pain. So many other orphans throughout Ghana faced a dark reality as they were dropped off in a central location. From there, just anyone was allowed to take them under the guise of adoption. As we predicted, the sex trafficking, child slavery, and internet porn of Ghana’s children skyrocketed. But our kids remained unaffected through the devastating year-long ordeal. For this, we are so grateful, and we are moving ahead to create a reality of family and love for as many of these orphans as possible.
Now, we have a new challenge accompanied by a new opportunity. The political climate in Africa has shifted once again with the election of a new president. Recognizing that the excessive increase of unacceptable online content exploiting Ghana’s orphans wasn’t impressing the United Nations, the new president has decided to revert back to a plan that already failed several years ago. They call this “reintegration.” Already, the care of 50% of our children has been forced upon any blood relative the government can locate. While this method is a slight improvement over the previous plan of giving them to just anyone, it rarely results in a happy or healthy home for these abandoned children.
Orphans in Ghana are viewed as “lesser people,” as undesirables, and those with special needs are considered cursed. It isn’t a surprise that these relatives do not want the extra responsibility or social stigma. Furthermore, the government has withdrawn their consent for anyone to build new family homes. There focus is purely on reintegration. How will we help these kids now?
Imagine being an orphan in our orphanage. One day someone picks you up and drives you to a distant uncle’s house. You’ve never met before, and he doesn’t want you either. He’s forthright about it. The government official leaves you there in the midst of their argument. Not only does this inflict an unforgettable wound of rejection, but often results in much of the same abuse other orphans already face. Incest and slavery are especially common in these scenarios. It broke our hearts hearing how three of our kids are now pregnant after being repeatedly raped by these male relatives.
The best cases are when a grandmother is still living. She usually wants her grandchild, but just can’t afford food or care. Now there, we can help the most.
Our first step is to expand our Eggs for Kids Program to reach these children and the families who have taken them in, both good and bad. This gives us a chance to not only support the healthier family environments, but speak hope into the desperate and abusive ones. Any of the children now living within an hour and a half of the chicken farm will be included in this outreach. Because the whole family will receive this healthy source of protein, we will be providing a positive element to a situation generally regard as negative by these relatives.
For the remaining children still under our care at the orphanage, we plan to partner with a Ghanaian woman who currently runs a boarding school, basketball leadership camp, and runs a few family homes. As a nurse, her connection to the hospital allows her privileges to keep babies and young children under her care. In addition to this advantage, she runs a school and basketball programs to as a way to maneuver around the reintegration policy year-round. She has been allowed to keep her family homes running because the children are all a part of the other programs, so the facility is not classified as an orphanage. We are very excited and honored to work with her! To accommodate our kids at her location and school, we have just broke ground on building our first family home!
During our trips in August and December, we met with social welfare officers, government officials, and other orphanage directors to learn what’s happening, discuss options, and develop a new strategy despite every injustice. We will not give up them. Our kids are forced to be flexible, and we must be too if we are to accomplish our common goal: to give them a better life. Our ability to respond to their needs has always been our greatest strength. Whether at an orphanage, boarding school, with grandma or a distant family relative’s home, these kids deserve a better life, and that’s exactly what we will continue to give them. They will understand their innate worth through our perseverance, flexibility, and the most powerful force of all, love.
You have the power to make this possible. Nobody else is going to step in and help these orphaned or reintegrated kids if we don’t. And if we are unable to raise the support needed to continue to bring hope into their lives, nobody is waiting to take over. We are the plan. There is no plan B. Nobody else is coming to help these kids, so we can’t let them down.
As we transition from orphanage care, we will continue to sponsor the children in boarding school, expand education opportunities to those now living with relatives, and continue to provide clean water, eggs, and hope to the community. We will also be launching a new outreach for girls and young women to speak empowerment and value into their lives. They are currently the primary victims in their culture, and studies prove the fastest way to change this is through education. Through leadership education, young women from every region of Ghana can grow to influence the changes that will truly improve the whole country. We can be a glimmer of hope, something to look forward to, a reason to keep going in the midst of their cruel situation. They will learn how to change their lives and change the future of Ghana.
We need you to join us as we build family homes, increase or Eggs for Kids Program, and bring hope back into the lives of these unforgettable children.
