From Houses to Homes is a grassroots organization providing sustainable housing, along with access to health care and education in communities in Guatemala. We first started building homes in Santa Maria de Jesus, a typical indigenous community with lack of basic human services. We soon realized that housing, education and health care go hand-in-hand to break the cycle of poverty. “Escuela Kemna'oj” is a Pre K- 9th grade school, which we have operated since 2011. Many of the children who have been recipient of homes from our organization attend the school. The school allows its students a quality education, which provides them with the skills they need to better their future and improve their quality of life.
We have since started building in many other communities. Identifying the need for quality health care we opened our women and children’s medical clinic “St Josephs” in 2012. It is located in Pastores; however, we welcome residents from surrounding communities, including those from Santa Maria de Jesus. On average the clinic treats approximately 300 people a month, with approximately75% of those treated being women/ girls. Our clinic which is staffed with women only, has a general practitioner, however it also offers dental care along with a part time Obstetrician/gynecologist.
