BENEFITING: INTERNATIONAL STUDENT VOLUNTEERS INC

EVENT DATE: Jun 03, 2011

Rachel Kwan

THE STORY:

On June 3, I will be traveling to the Dominican Republic to volunteer with International Student Volunteers, a non-profit organization based in the United States. There, we will be working on community development, children's education, and enviromental sustainability. This trip is 5 weeks long, including adventure tours of the country, a cultural homestay period, and the 80 hrs of volunteering.

The Dominican Republic is a developing country facing the ongoing struggles of poverty. Although its economy is one of the fastest-growing in the region, 48.5% of its total citizens live below the poverty line (United Statistics Division). This number is even higher if only considering rural citizens. ISV assists with projects such as building schools, libraries, and community centres. We also will conduct Education programs that focus on areas such as English and Health.

For a long time, I have wanted to travel and experience other cultures. I grew to think that giving to the global community while traveling would be even better, and this notion persuaded me to join ISV. I also feel privileged to be so fortunate in my high standard of living and access to education here in Canada. I wanted to improve impoverished conditions, even if it was in small, idealistic way. Education would give children more access to better jobs and perhaps hope.

I have worked over the past year to earn money towards this trip. I will also be digging into my savings. As with many endeavors, this program requires money to operate, and I would be hugely appreciative of any donations to offset the cost. If you're able to help or pass on the word, please do so!

This would be a gift from our community of Lethbridge to the world. Thank you for your consideration!

Your work-in-progress ambassador,

Rachel

Note: ISV is a USA-based non-profit organization, but is not currently registered as a non-profit in Canada; which means that your contribution is only tax-deductible if you file income taxes in the United States.
