From Emergency to Stability: Amurtel Shifts Gears
July 31, 2016
BENEFITING: AMURTEL INC
Can you imagine giving birth to your baby and returning from the hospital to a tent pitched on concrete in the summer heat? You have nothing but a few donated baby clothes and a limited supply of basic food. Toilets and showers are shared with 1,000 others.
We can’t stop this happening. But with your support, Amurtel Greece can provide care to refugee mothers and babies facing these challenges.
Who we are
Amurtel Greece is a volunteer group of midwives, doulas, breastfeeding specialists, proactive mothers and concerned women committed to the well-being of mothers and babies. As a very grassroots yet global NGO, Amurtel focuses on projects by women specifically for women and children.
What we’ve done so far
We’ve been working in the camps and on the islands since September 2015, providing a space space for women and children, where they can access:
Midwifery examinations and support with births
Infant feeding support with emphasis on breastfeeding
Supplemental food for pregnant and lactating mothers
Supplemental food for children between 6 months and 2 years
A baby bathing area
Other mother-infant care or medical supplies
In the early days, when refugees were transiting through Greece, our focus was on keeping them safe for their journey. But since the borders closed, tens of thousands of refugees are living in tent settlements with limited sanitation and food. We’re on site at Pireaus Port, providing the care they need throughout the week.
Why we need your help now!
The money donated to us so far has been spent on the essentials to set up and run our service. We now need you to help us meet a growing need!
Your donations will allow us to:
Continue to run our services 5 days a week
Ensure our supplies meet demand – purchasing the food and other items that are so desperately needed
Set up a new safe mother and baby space – providing a cool, calm and supportive sanctuary from the heat and dust of the camp
These problems are not going away. Refugees will be here in Greece for many years to come. With your support, we will be here alongside them offering our care.
