Fruit Picking Equipment
Organized by: Flo Bert
Glean Milwaukee needs $400 for fruit picking equipment for fall 2014.
With more fruit pickers and scales, 2 teams can effectively harvest fruit
at the same time, and measure their success this fall!
Milwaukee is full of fruit trees - many of them in backyards. Many of these trees are inherited through the purchase of homes, and much of the fruit falls to the ground and is thrown away.
When I moved to Milwaukee in 2010, I noticed apple trees in my neighborhood - the apples tasted delicious! I knocked on doors and introduced myself. I was invited to pick them all, and I cleaned up the yards as a thank you. The tree owners were relieved, and I wondered if we could make this bigger, and glean even more trees...
Last fall, Glean Milwaukee volunteers harvested 564 lbs. of apples from backyard trees. The recovered food was donated to Milwaukee organizations in food insecure areas of the city.
