In 2012, Volunteers of America Michigan (VOAMI) organized the state’s first Stand Down for Female Veterans. The overwhelming response to that event was evidence of the unmet need among this growing portion of the Veteran population. As a result, planning began for a Great Lakes Regional Stand Down for Female Veterans, to be held Sept. 16, 2013, in Lansing, Mich. This will be part service fair, part tribute to the women who wore the uniform. Female veterans face obstacles often not addressed at traditional Stand Downs. In addition to the risk of substance abuse and mental illness facing their male counterparts, female Veterans are more likely to have dependent children and may have a harder time finding work that pays a decent wage. Women also can be dealing with the aftereffects of military sexual trauma (MST) and the resulting post-traumatic stress. Many are at risk of becoming homeless and many do not even identify themselves as "veterans." This event aims to change that.
