BENEFITING: LIBERIAN INITIATIVE FOR EMPOWERMENT INC
While many of us in developed countries like the United States—have enjoyed the benefit of free primary education. Sadly, this is untrue for many youth across Africa, particularly youth in West Africa, Liberia.
Liberia is one of the few Africans countries that have just emerged from fourteen years of civil war. The war claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people. It brought displacement among families, and infrastructures were decimated.
The end of the war few years ago, present the country with great social challenges. Many children are out of school. Not many primary schools available for youth to attend. In fact, schools that are available are out of reach and expensive. Unemployment is on the rise among parents, cost of living continues to increase. As a direct result, many parents are unable to sustain and/or keep their children in schools. All of these not only harm the future of these children. It also harms the vibrancy of the communities they live.
My recent visit to Liberia brought me into direct contact with these realities. As I walked in large and small communities, my eyes could not escape the hardship that many parents and youth are faced with. Many youth have engaged and some are engaging into unhealthy activities such as gang and the selling of drug to sustain themselves. These activities are unproductive and would not present them with a much brighter future. Further, it does not prepare them to live a responsible and productive life.
To fulfill the educational needs of both youth and children, the Liberian Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), had established an initiative called “Fulfilling Dreams.” This initiative was created to provide educational opportunities in the form of scholarship to youth and children in Liberia.
However, after re-examining the educational needs of youth and the communities I visited. The Liberian Initiative for Empowerment is in the process of constructing a primary institution to provide many children and youth who are not in school with a free primary education. The construction of this institution will increase our capacity to address many children educational needs. It will also bring hope to children who have expressed a great need of attending school.
Furthermore, the establishment of this institution will provide youth with a positive alternative through educational activities that will be held on campus. Additionally it will set them on the path to obtaining an education, which will prepare them to be a responsible citizen and contributors to their community and country.
With this in mind, your donations will assist us with the construction of this school, which will fulfill their educational needs and bring hope to these children.
