BENEFITING: PENNSYLVANIA IMMIGRATION RESOURCE CENTER
When women and children fleeing gang violence, rape, and death in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador reach the US border, their journey to safety is far from over. Many are sent to the Berks Family Detention Center, where they are detained by the US government.
The Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center (PIRC) and HIAS Pennsylvania, (HIAS PA) together with the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Human Rights First, and ACLU of Pennsylvania (ACLU-PA) have combined forces to fund an advocate for the women and children detained at Berks Family Shelter.
We are seeking $10,000 to hire a part-time advocate to who would make sure the families get the legal representation they need to be able to claim their rights in court. The advocate would also make sure the families get the medical services they need, are provided with interpreters and can connect with their families outside of the facility. For these women and children, the advocate would be a life-line, making sure that their journey away from persecution ends in safety.
