My name is Taina and I have been in the struggle to end mass incarceration for several years now. My husband, Richard, was arrested in 2011 and I realized what an unjust system we exist in and began to organize for change.
What I have learned is that we will never get free unless we are empowering people inside prison and their families to advocate for their own collective liberation. We must develop policies that will reduce the prison population, support our loved ones when they come home, and be based in the principle that no human being is disposable. We all deserve to be invested in, and investment in people ultimately is what keeps communities safe.
This is why we created Initiate Justice -- an organization made up of incarcerated people and their families organizing to pass California state ballot initiatives focused on divestment from punitive systems and investment in people, communities, and restorative means of reducing harm.
Our first campaign will be to support Prop 57 (to help keep youth out of the adult system and help adults earn time off their sentences) and then we will begin drafting our own ballot measures for future elections. Along the way we will build a strong membership of people inside and outside of prison walls to lead this work every step of the way.
We are new and we are starting from the bottom up so we need support! Please donate to support the following areas:
- Flyer printing
- Web site development
- Legal assistance
- Stipends for prisoners organizing inside
People impacted by incarceration are not the problem -- We are the solution! Please donate today. Thank you!
