Brian Berheide wrote -We are trying to raise money to fund the second-annual Chicago Youth TheatreFest. This is an adjudicated event that strives to bring students from the City of Chicago together to observe, present, improve, and celebrate works of student theatre and connect students to college and career opportunities in the theatre arts. The festival will also include student workshops and performance showcases. Participants will prepare monologues, scenes, short plays of varying lengths and difficulty to be presented to an adjudicator for a 1, 2, or 3 ranking. Students will be given the opportunity to advance from preliminary to finals levels. This year we are pleased to announce that we are adding a middle-school level of competition as well! Though we are asking for a small registration fee per student to help pay for our venue and adjudicators, we need additional funds to defray the cost of food, printing and supplies, awards, workshop facilitators, and programs. Your contribution will continue to support this new program and provide opportunities for young Chicago artists. There is no limit to what this festival could become. Students from schools that might not have robust arts programming will find an opportunity to shine. Students will meet students from their own city to celebrate each other and their love of theatre. Organizations and colleges can use this festival as an opportunity to offer scholarships, recruit students and audition young talent. In celebrating what urban students are doing right through this festival, we will be spotlighting and recognizing students who are often marginalized or often don't even leave their own communities. This festival is a model for showcasing the GREAT things our young people can do and providing young people with opportunities to create and present art for their city as well as foster an interest in school and beyond.
