I am joining the non-profit organization Firelight Foundation in the fight to help end the mother-to-child transmission of HIV and substantially reduce AIDS related maternal and child deaths. This fall I am committed to raising $15,000 for the organization’s Healthy Beginnings Fund. All proceeds will go directly towards two community-based organizations in Lusaka, Zambia- Bwafwano Integrated Services Organization and Matero Care Center. Both organizations use a community-based model to bridge the clinic to the community to provide integrated health services, social welfare, and educational support to families living with HIV and AIDS in underserved areas in and near Lusaka.
Why is this Fund Important to Me?
My birth name was Lillian Muleya. I was the first born of a single mother from Zambia. She gave me up for adoption at birth. Several months later my life was forever changed when I was adopted into a beautiful family and the rest is history-one that you are all a part of as my community of family and friends.
In 2002, I made my "pilgrimage" to Lusaka. During that visit, I met many amazing people who were involved in life changing work that focused on building healthier communities impacted by HIV and AIDS in the urban and rural areas near Lusaka. I vowed to return to Lusaka and to find a way to "give back" to the community focusing on the health and welfare needs of women and children.
Fast forward over 10 years later and my dream is becoming a realty. Next January and February I will be spending part of an 8-week sabbatical in Lusaka and the surrounding areas. I will be visiting Bwafwano and Matero and spending time with many of the women and children impacted by the work of both organizations. For me, this is just the beginning of what I hope will become a long-standing partnership.
I hope you will join me in the fight to help end the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Zambia by supporting the Healthy Beginnings Fund! All donations are tax-deductible and remember many employers offer donor-matching programs! If you prefer to make a donation by check, please email me for snail mail instructions at: email@example.com.
