Funding an Education for Future Advancement

Hello, my name is Janelle Butler and I am an 18 year old, college bound student. Going to college has always been something that I have always looked forward to. I was always on top of my applications and applied early anytime possible. Through my college search, I discovered the illustrious Spelman College to later set foot on campus and fall in love with it. After being notified of my acceptances, I knew that only half the battle was won as I would still need to organize funding for my future education. Being one of 4 siblings in college is already extremely expensive, but in my case even more because my twin and I are heading off the college at the same time. In my undergrad studies, I plan to study Business, Marketing, Comparative Women Studies and Photography to later attend grad school in pursuit of a masters in business administration. With this education I will create a business/organization designed to promote men and women with natural features that have historically been unaccepted to freely express their natural beauty. For the future, my vision expands to also combat social injustice across the world. The idea for this company was developed and inspired by my experiences with my natural hair. Representation is important and there is an under-representation of natural men and women within media. After learning to love my hair, I attained greater confidence in myself and future goals. The psychological explanation to my findings is the connection of beauty to confidence and positive self-esteem. I believe that reconstructing the minds of black men and women with confidence in their natural self will advance the black race now and create a generation of black youth confident enough to seek answers to the socioeconomic problems of tomorrow. The black community has always been told how to change and manipulate their hair, never how to manage it which is why my company will educate guests and participants how to manage their hair. Issues surrounding natural hair and its acceptance have been addressed in the past, but progress has plateaued, and is why I plan to end the straight hair beauty standard and bring back the beauty of natural hair. I am very passionate about creating such a big movement because I only wish I was fortunate enough to have that in my life when I was younger. Growing up I have always worked hard to keep my grades up in school because I knew that I couldn't afford to let my grades drop. However, after school I wasn't in the library, but in the dance studio for practice with the dance team. Throughout high school I performed and competed with the dance team and served as the captain of the varsity team my senior year. In 2015 I received the most improved award, and the year following became the most valued player, elected by my coach. After countless late nights and little to no sleep, my work proved to pay itself off as I left high school with a 3.4 Unweighted GPA on the 4 point scale, and a weighted GPA of 5.4 on the 6 point scale. One of my goals is to expose myself to other businesses and continue building relationships so that upon graduation, my business will already have taken big steps towards or after its launch. With continued discipline and leadership, I have no doubt that I will be able to finish school and attain my goals towards improving the world around myself and others. Thank you for reading about my goals and ambitions. Any help is more than appreciated. Best regards :)
