Funding to study abroad to South Africa
Organized by: Bethany Rose
EVENT DATE Jun 17, 2015
I am a senior at CSUSB. I have a major in philosophy and a dual minor in history with emphasis in African history and graphic design. I will be graduating in December of 2015. This is my last chance to study abroad before I graduate. I am planning on going to graduate school for a masters in African history. This oppurtunity to go to South Africa will not only allow me to have a better chance of acceptance into a graduate program, it will also allow me to experience first hand what I have been studying over the past two years.
I have always had a passion for African history. As a young child I fell in love with Ancient Egypt and its history. I have always found much of the way that the Egyptians had built such a complex society to be fascinating. Then in seventh grade, I was introduced to the music from RENT. Being given a simple background history on Jonathan Larsons play, I become very interested in HIV/AIDS and how it had affected so many people. However the virus was far more deadly in Africa. This struck an intrest within me that I have held onto since then.
The South Afica trip will be from June 22nd till July 15th. I will not be able to get financial aid due to the need durring the school year. I must take one class that cost $1058. The other thing that is quite costly is the flight to and from. Prices range between $1800 to $2100. We will be staying at the University of Cape Town. The program fees come up to about $2550, which includes room and board, one meal a day and travel within South Africa. The rest of the program fees and money is for food and for personal expenses.
I plan on applying for scollorships and grants as well as saving money. I work two minimum wage jobs on campus for a total of 20 hours a week. The majority of that money goes to gas, car upkeep, food and other bills I have.
This is the second chance I am getting to have a once in a lifetime oppurtunity fulfilled. Any donations would be appreciated. Thank you in advance to anyone who is able to help me fund my extended learning.
