One of our best friends Nicole has just returned home from a semester spent abroad in Africa, just in time to spend the holiday season with her family before she heads off for an adventure-filled second semester in Spain. Two days ago in a tragic and unexpected occurrence, the entirety of her family's home burnt down as a result of an electrical fire. Her mother, father, siblings, and little pooch Spangle are all thankfully safe. Though they are devoid of a home-base they are nonetheless united by the love and gratefulness felt in having survived this horrible incident. How will they clothe themselves, feed themselves, and where will they sleep at night? While others will occupy themselves with Christmas shopping and holiday traveling these are the fundamental questions and challenges that Nicole and her family must face during this holiday season.
Nicole is the one person in my life who has shown me the beauty that comes with discovering one's own sense of autonomy and the power associated in living apart from the confines of socially dictated expectations. She is entirely fearless. She operates in a way that has always been unfathomable to me -- possessing a heightened regard for the people in her life, and consistently exuding an inherently selfless nature. In the time that I've known her she has contributed so immensely to the way that I view the world. Through her exemplary demonstration of love, compassion, and commitment to freedom she has amplified my own confidence, allowing me to start deciphering who the hell I want to be when I grow up and how I plan on positively impacting the world.
There is nothing we wouldn't do to contribute to the happiness and safety of our friend and her family as they try to make sense of their situation during this difficult time.
Any donation you are comfortable making is one that is greatly appreciated as we begin an initiative to support this beautiful family.
