THE STORY:

Mabuhay! I am Dr. Carlo Evangelista, one of the first few respondents who came to Tacloban after the Typhoon to find out as soon as possible how the devastation affected my family who were in Tacloban. I worried even more when I heard that the pregnant woman on the news who is probably the sole survivor from a devastated house could be my sister-in-law. And several unverified news that the entire Tacloban was immersed in the storm surge as some will say that it was as high as 17 meters? I then rushed to fly to Cebu, which is the nearest airport to Tacloban with my sister, the following day. As my sister and I are both government physicians and with the help of my wife's cousin who works in the military, we had the opportunity of boarding the C130 plane to Tacloban two days after the storm. As I arrive at the Tacloban Airport, we could not believe how terrible my beloved place has become. We saw people just wandering around dehydrated, starving, generally hostile looking for anything or anyone who will feed their empty stomach. I continued praying for strength and courage to face whatever losses and wreckage will I see as we approach our home in Sampaguita Village. It was already dawn when we reached the gate of Bethany Hospital. It is where I planned for us to stay overnight and help out treat patients. However, there seem to have no health services going on, instead we encountered a group of bystanders who claims to have been guarding the gate and resisted us on going further. We had no choice that night but to just walk straight to our house and bravely face misfortunes. Upon arriving the perimeter of our house, we initially saw a completely wrecked house (as seen on the photos above). Before losing hope, a neighbor told us that my parents are safe and was staying at the far end of the wreckage where a part of the house was actually standing. I was relieved and thankful after seeing my beloved family to have survived the havoc.

An all out support was not seen from the national government during the first crucial days after the Typhoon Haiyan. With my disappointment, there were no organized rescue teams looking for survivors under the rubles and no relief goods were distributed during the first five days aftermath. Hence, homeless survivors and families all wandered around the city like zombies ransacking whatever there is left inside closed establishments. Since we cannot totally rely that our government will actually extend to us their plan of rehabilitation alongside controversies. I humbly ask for your kind hearts to help me build them a home that they deserve.
