I am an active duty Sailor in the United States Navy. My Mother, Virginia Gaerlan, passed away on 30Jan2015 at 68 years of age in San Antonio, TX. She grew up a long time resident of Pittsburg, CA where all of her friends and family lived nearby. In 2011 she lost her home after struggling to pay the mortgage during the financial crisis, and moved to live with me in Cibolo, TX where I had been stationed at the time. She had been disabled by a stroke she had in 2002 and had been living on a fixed income since then. It is my firm belief that the stress of having her heart broken when my sister Joli succumbed to cancer in 1996 prematurely led to the many ailments that resulted in her initial stroke. My mother was there for me when I graduated boot camp in 1997 and she has been there for me always. My mother stayed behind in Texas when I was transferred to another duty station because she did not want to return to California where she had so much heartache, and she did not want to be with me because of the snow and extreme cold where I was going. She had made many friends at the Schertz Senior Center and she was content to stay and settled in Schertz where she made a new life and forgot the pain of her past. She recently had another stroke and I traveled back to be with her but was unable to bring her with me due to her condition and left her in Senior care with hopes that she would be rehabilitated and come back to live with me but she suddenly passed away as I was settling in at home with a new Son just born a few days earlier.
My Mother did not save money, she wanted to be happy in the end and didn't have much in the way of savings as what little she had went into the care she was receiving at the end. When my sister Joli, passed in 1996 my mother gave her a crypt that she had bought for herself next to my grandparents. Her wish was to be put to rest alongside my sister that we all loved dearly. All funds will be put towards having a funeral for my mother and any associated costs.
