BENEFITING: ONE WORLD CHILDRENS FUND
Do you believe that every child deserves the right to go to school?
I've spent the last 9 months in Burundi, doing a fellowship with FVS-AMADE, a local non-profit that empowers community groups to care for orphans and vulnerable children. Burundi is home to an estimate 680,000 orphans- nearly one in every 5 children. These children are often unable to pay school fees, and by the time that they reach secondary school, many drop out in order to provide financially for themselves and younger siblings.
In September 2014, FVS-AMADE opened a secondary school, “Amie des Enfants" in the rural commune of Matana, an honors school for high-performing students. 30% of the students are orphans who receive free tuition and board. This opportunity will change the trajectory of their lives, enabling them to pursue higher education or to find decent paying jobs after graduation. Floriane (pictured left), one of the orphans at the school, dreams of becoming a journalist when she grows up.
FVS-AMADE strives to provide the students with the highest quality education, and has made the school fully bilingual (French/English) and given each child access to a computer. Although it opened its doors to the first class of students last fall, the organization unfortunately still lack the funds to build a science lab — an important subject for students to learn.
One of my very close friends, who prefers to remain anonymous, has generously agreed to pay half of the costs of building the science lab if I am able to fundraise the other $10,000. He's also very thoughtfully chosen to dedicate the lab to the loving memory of one of my best friends, Luke Akao, and it would mean a lot to me to see it built.
So, I'm calling on the rest of my friends/family to help support me in reaching this goal. Any amount will make a difference. If 500 people donate just $20, we will reach our goal and be able to build the science lab. Thank you so much for your support!
