Hi, I'm Rebecca. I'm mom to a pint sized superhero! Gabe is racing in a half marathon! I am raising money for Gabe to race in the First Light Marathon on January 10, 2016, in Mobile Alabama. It's to help pay for his race day, food, lodging and travel expenses. The money I raise here will be used by myTEAM TRIUMPH Angels of Georgia to fund his trip. Anything over the necessary amount for Gabe to race goes directly to myTEAM TRIUMPH Angels of Georgia.
A little on Gabriel...and me. :)
Gabriel is five years old and has special needs. He can't really run or play as much as he'd like because he has a very small airway that doesn't allow enough air in to sustain extended activity. Gabe is in line for a major surgery to repair it but it's a very complicated, risky surgery. I'm Gabriel's mom and I've been by his side, along with his siblings and other family members, to help him best thrive, grow and develop as well as he can with him while he copes with his medical issues. One way I do that is to find a way to help him be included in activity and the community. At first, I started running with him and he began to really enjoy the time out with me, leaning forward, wind in his face, grinning at me and just generally enjoying the jogging paths, the neighborhood, outdoors and all the sights. His first spontaneous word was "run"! I joined an organization called I RUN 4, thinking I could run with him to add an additional dimension to our outings, one of advocacy, connection with other families like mine as well as supporting other children and adults with disabilities and having my child supported by other runners. I saw Gabe struggle to connect to other children, and watch him be excluded in activities. I also noticed that his ability to keep his energy up was difficult. He'd play, stop and rest, repeat...repeat...repeat.
Through IR4, I found a fantastic organization on a National level where I thought I could run with Gabe in my home state of Georgia but I found out that they weren't active. Through Grace and Faith, I found another way to run with my child, advocate for others with disabilities, develop community involvement and extend the benefits I saw with running with my little boy to others who either longed for the thrill of the race and for the wind in their face and/or the connection to the community it fosters. Being shoulder to shoulder with the community rather than at the rear or on the sidelines, being supported in a goal to achieve.
I decided to found myTEAM TRIUMPH Angels of Georgia so that I could pass on what I knew to be one of the most valuable services to the disability community. I was helping to redefine the word ACHIEVE. I hope to continue to be able to give Gabe the gift of the race and others as well.
Thank you for considering donating to a very worthy cause, and to Gabe so he may be able to race. Check out the organizations facebook page to see who we are.
