Cooking Can Kill
Did you know that cooking over traditional and unsafe stoves, collecting wood, and breathing in toxic cooking smoke puts the lives of over 3 billion people in the developing world at risk every day? In fact, exposure to cooking smoke and cooking over open flames or inefficient and polluting stoves kills over 4 million people every year. This environmental and health issue called household air pollution especialy affects women and children.
For example, instead of going to school or running a small business, young girls and women spend hours collecting wood for cooking. Collecting wood also frequently puts women and girls at risk for attacks and sexual assault, while burning solid fuels for cooking and heating, like wood, contributes to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and air pollution.
You Can Help with just $25
You can help put an end to this global tragedy by supporting the Alliance's work in promoting clean cookstoves and fuels. By donating $25--the average cost of a cleaner and safer cookstove-- you can help a family cook in safe and healthy conditions. With a $25 gift, you can help a family keep their daughter in school instead of spending up to 20 hours a week of her time collecting firewood far from her village and home.
