WHY: Coach Gafarov deserves this. He has coached hundreds of kids in wrestling and soccer all over the work for the last 28 years. He has never turned anyone away for not being able to pay, and he has also never had a gym of his own. He’s been given use of schools and community centers, but in the end, usually because the spaces were need for something else, he has had to move. His passion and dedication to providing the Youth of Gusar, Azerbaijan with a healthy outlet is unparalleled. It is a testament to his drive that he has found a building. Now we need to turn it into a gym. A gym that he and his wrestlers will be proud of, a gym where he can coach every day, and a gym that no one can take from his hands.
HOW: We are asking everyone we know, and a whole bunch of people we don’t know, to donate whatever they can to help Gafur achieve his dream. $5 or $10 dollars is greatly appreciated. $25 or more will earn you a pair of souvenir Lezgi Socks. $75 or more will earn you a pair of real Lezgi Socks. And if someone wants to donate $2000 or more, we’ll ship you a Lezgi Carpet, called a Sumakh. Check out www.lezgimountaincrafts.com to see what we’re talking about. (Except the carpet, all rewards will be brought to the US and shipped from there around April, 2015.)
Lastly, and most important, share this campaign with everyone you know. Then share it again. Then share it with people you don’t know. Seriously, we all have smartphones, just show it to random people on the street or in line at the grocery store. Let’s make this thing go viral!
WHAT: With whatever donations we receive Gafur, myself (the token Peace Corps Volunteer,) his family, his wrestlers, and other community members, we will remodel the building he has procured into the Gym of his dreams. We’ll fix the flooring, electrical, plumbing, and heating. We’ll clean, paint, and insulate our hearts out. And then we’ll bring in all of the mats, lockers, weights, jump ropes, wrestling posters, and Gafur’s desk to make this the most “…super, perfect gym” Gusar has ever seen.
