Gameplan: The Future of Academic & Career Planning
Organized by: Matthew Wade
EVENT DATE Sep 04, 2014
Who Am I?
A proven entrepreneur with 21 years experience in web based solutions, 14 of which have been focused on academic and career development-oriented programs that improve retention, graduation rates, speed to graduation, and employment opportunity. I have assisted colleges in recruiting prospective students, retaining current students, building stronger relationships with alumni, and providing students the necessary self discovery tools to assess interests that will lead them to make their best suited career and degree choices. A highly active member of NACADA (The Global Community for Academic Advising) and a steering committee member for NACADA's Technology in Advising Commission, I am recognized within education circles as standing at the vanguard of the progressive technological movement.
I have committed my career to helping others solve problems and overcome obstacles. Along with cofounding Gameplan, I:
(a) co-launched an initiative called MileMesh to build a resilient Internet infrastructure for Hoboken, NJ, to not only protect the city's communication system from storms and flooding, but to also provide free 24/7/365 internet access to the community's less privileged.
(b) co-manage the "Like A Boss" young entrepreneur program for HOPES CAP, Inc., which provides community services that respond to the social, educational and training needs of individuals in an effort to overcome barriers and fight the causes of poverty.
What Will You Help Me Achieve?
Funding will go immediately and specifically towards pre-alpha development, which refers to all activities performed during the software project prior to testing. These activities will include requirements analysis, software design, software development, and unit testing.
How exciting would it be to play a part in guiding successful futures for our country's youth?
What have I done so far with Gameplan
I have built a version of Gameplan that is currently in operation and is being sold to colleges and universities around the world. We have already expertly and successfully tied interests and skills assessment to career and degree exploration.
Additional features we have already built include:
* Resume & Cover Letter construction
* Interview exercise
* Alumni & Peer networking/mentoring
* Virtual exchanges between students and and their academic and career advisors
But its time to take it to the next level. Gameplan must become mobile-centric, highly visual, gamified, and engaging, and be made available to the public no matter where you live, whether you are a professional, or a college, high school, or middle school student.
What Will The New Gameplan Include?
It starts with a game within the game. An animated “virtual” training ground tucked inside of a larger academic and career development program.
Take a game like Farmville where you successfully build a farm and “win”. At the end of the game you are left with nothing real. No take away. Game over. However, that game and many like it are really popular...and super engaging!
So, in that spirit, in Gameplan’s animated environment, you develop a career plan until you “win”. Difference is you are left with an actual blueprint for how to do it in real life. And Gameplan will be there every step of the way to assist in executing on that blueprint.
Interests and skills assessment is also conducted in an engaging game format. With this deeper understanding of your interests and skills, you can then identify occupations and degrees that resonate the most.
Build a resume, learn how to interview, to ask for references. Learn how to plan and acquire skills in a virtual setting first before being prompted to practice with a friend or family member in a mock rehearsal. Report the details of the experience back to Gameplan by loading the exercise content for peer review, gain experience points for your continuing skill evolution, and finally, seek out a real professional environment to practice this newly developed skill. Skill completion will then unlock other features of Gameplan. You earn access. You will receive a variety of rewards and badges as you progress, and a status bar will always be present, reminding you of where you are in your journey.
Peer interaction is a major driver of program engagement. You can join different groups in Gameplan based on topics like industry, job title, company, degree, interest, skill you are looking to acquire, geographic location, Internships, just to name a few.
Members of a group assist one another by answering questions and giving constructive feedback on skills acquisition exercises. Build your Gameplan reputation by commenting and having peers “upvote” you.
For Employers, Gameplan can be used to not only find candidates for open positions, but to build relationships by joining groups and acting as a mentor for users. Employers can strategically cultivate a “farm system” of talent that they can groom over a period of time. Similar to employers, college Admissions officers can mentor high school students and recruit prospective students.
There’s still much work to do. So I ask that you join me in pursuit of this dream and let’s make sure everyone has a Gameplan.
