Originally from California, Gary Katz has made NY his home for the past 22 years, and for the past few months, he has made Mendez Boxing Gym his second home with Christophe Mendy, his trainer and boxing coach.
A rabbi and a clinical social worker, Gary has spent his professional life trying to help others. Through the course of my own life and career, I’ve come to learn that the greatest fights aren’t necessarily in the ring, but rather in the heart and mind. Every single day, people fight to overcome the various hurdles and potholes that life places in their paths. They fight fear, they act courageously to get past trauma, or they show up to overcome addiction, anxiety or depression. There is no glory or fanfare for these daily fights, but there is freedom, peace and serenity.
“When I was in 5th or 6th grade, I went to a summer day camp that had boxing as one of the activities. After getting hit twice in my first fight, I used the fact that I had asthma as an excuse to quit the fight. I’ve always been bothered by the fact that I quit that fight because of fear. Fighting for Gleason’s’ Give a Kid a Dream is an opportunity to overcome that fear while helping others have a better chance at overcoming the challenges in their lives.
Whether you want to help kids have a better shot in life, or you want to see Gary fight and get hit (Yeah, you know you do!), please donate now and buy tickets to Fighter For Life IX on May 10th!
