THE STORY:

The Gavin Warrior Foundation (https://www.facebook.com/gavinswarriors) is dedicated to raising childhood cancer awareness. Our goal is to increase funding for childhood cancer research efforts and to provide financial assistance to individual families that are struggling during the battle they face. By supporting Gavin's Warriors, you are helping to create an organization that will assist families and researchers with the much needed support they require. This fundraiser's purpose is to generate funds in order to allow The Gavin Warrior Foundation to get up and running. Ken, our founder, has taken the call to become an advocate for childhood cancer awareness and support, he is very passionate about committing his time to this organization.

My family was affected by cancer in May of 2013, when our son, Gavin, was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer, at the age of 11. That news, and the following year, without a doubt, was the most challenging, stressful, financially and emotionally draining moment of my life. There are so many emotions that my family and I have experienced. Joy, sadness, relief, stress, pride, humility, hope, fear….. Gavin's journey has been difficult, he endured an intense chemotherapy treatment and received many surgeries, one of which was a one-of-a-kind operation, where the surgeons removed his entire right humerus (where the tumor was located) and replaced it with a cadaver bone. With the completion of his chemotherapy we look forward to his, and our, future. During the course of the past year my wife and I talked many times regarding the end of his chemo treatment and surgeries, and how much we looked forward to reaching that milestone. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that near the time of his diagnosis, many of those conversations involved using the word 'if' instead of 'when', and those are conversations that no parent should endure having.

While my family and I are in a celebratory mood since Gavin’s completion of chemo treatment and multiple surgeries, and have feelings of relief, our family has forever changed in unforeseen ways that has weakened, but also strengthened us, we know that there are still many challenges that lay ahead. Things have now been set in motion that will alter the plans and ideas that we may have had in our minds, as to how, during our lifetime, we would function as a family, and as individuals. There is still a difficult road ahead, filled with questions, fears, and obstacles that at points we will have to face. Gavin's will is strong, and I am confident he can handle anything, for I do not think that anything can defeat him, his will and determination are more than capable to battle and overcome anything he may encounter.

The support we have received and continue to receive, is absolutely amazing, and we are so humbled and appreciative of everything that has been done and continues to be done, and everyone who has shown their love for us. Believe me when I say, that I truly do not know how we would have made it through this journey, without all the support we have received.

When thinking about our situation, I have always thought, it is not helpful to question why or how this happened. What really matters most is how someone handles the situations that life presents. It is easy to be complacent, to be focused on oneself and not involve yourself in another’s struggles in life. Do not become those individuals, become heroes, heroes serving a purpose, and that purpose is to do what we are meant to do, serve, and help others. There are so many families out there just like ours that struggle every day, battling this horrible disease, our focus is to pay forward the support we received to those individuals and to increase fundraising efforts for research and treatment programs.

Currently The Gavin Warrior Foundation is applying for 501c3, non-profit status. Until approval, we are seeking assistance to help us fund the many events we have planned for the upcoming calendar year. There are many exciting and fun things that we are going to be organizing and we want to share that with all of you. Please consider donating to our cause and help us fight for our children, become a Gavin's Warrior today.

Thank You,

Ken
