THE STORY:

In the 12 months since Typhoon Haiyan wreaked massive devastation in the Philippines, it has never been clearer that the work of rebuilding is the work of choosing to care, day in and day out. As we stretched ourselves to organize the next community and build that next house, one thing caught our attention - the need to take special care of our little ones.

__________________________________________________________________

A year after Haiyan, many of our children are still hungry - for food, for caring, and for a fair chance to build their dreams again.

Hunger ends where caring begins, and you can start right here:

While the rehabilitation work is far from over, we remain optimistic that we can bring back our children's smiles, their energy, and hope for the future, simply because there is no shortage of people who care.

With our Kusina ng Kalinga, or Care Kitchens, we strive to end hunger for the children survivors of Haiyan. It is an in-school feeding program that aims to:

  • Provide nutritious lunch meals over the course of one school year
  • Improve school attendance rates and enhance children's learning capacities
  • Build a community that cares for the young by involving parents, teachers, and volunteers in the daily operations

Help us achieve scale and bring our Care Kitchens to more children in affected areas. We are targeting to raise $150,000 - the equivalent of setting up central kitchens to serve 3 additional schools.

Haiyan may be the strongest storm to ever hit us, but the tenacity of our collective hope and goodwill will make us rise again.

ABOUT

Gawad Kalinga (meaning to "give care") is a global movement that started in the Philippines. It aims to end poverty by first restoring the dignity of the poor. Since it was formally established in 2003, Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc. (GK) has expanded its work to over 2,000 organized communities throughout the Philippines - working with partners and volunteers to provide land for the landless, homes for the homeless, and food for the hungry.

Today GK Has emerged as a multi-faith, multicultural platform for nation building, which is also at the forefront of peace-building work in conflict areas and reconstruction work in disaster-affected communities. Gawad Kalinga continues to focus its efforts in post-Haiyan rehabilitation as well as the proactive relocation of families who continue to live in danger zones, making sure that no one is left behind nor forgotten.

The GK model has also been adopted in other developing countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.
