Gay older adults have not received the support and dignity that they deserve. As a young LGBT adult who grew up on the cusp of gay-acceptance in society, I feel that it is our duty to support these groundbreaking leaders. While the gay marriage debate rages on, there are many other un-addressed problems within the community which disproportionately burden LGBT older adults--including: isolation, unequal partner benefits, decreased familial support, housing discrimination, and barriers to accessing senior services.
The needs are not only complex but the number of older LGBT individuals is growing. By 2030 it is estimated that there will be 7-million LGBT older adults reaching retirement age. Senior service providers are just now addressing the needs of gay seniors. Friendly House's Gay & Grey program is the leading advocate for LGBT folks in Portland and serves as an example nationwide.
