EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
When I came out 23 years ago, the world was a different place. It was hard to imagine the happy future that I craved for myself fitting in with the dreams that my family and friends had for me. I had wasted 23 wishes on 23 birthday cakes, wishing that I wouldn’t be gay. When I finally found the strength to come out to myself and others, I was incredibly blessed to have an amazingly supportive immediate and extended family, in addition to my friends and larger community. It was certainly a journey of sorts, particularly for my parents and grandmother, but one that helped us all grow and evolve, as individuals and in our relationship with each other. Since those years, I have been dedicated, working along side groups like PFLAG and GLSEN, to helping individuals and families find the support that they desire and deserve. In the 1990’s, I was involved in setting up some of the very first GSA’s in schools, doing trainings on GLBT issues at a time when we became targets of the Far Right for saying the word “gay” out loud in schools. In the late 90’s and early 2000’s I planned conferences for GLSEN to bring young people together to build a sense of hope, self esteem and since then have dedicated my professional life to helping individuals embrace their authentic selves.
My extended family has actively reached out and made a place for our GLBT relatives on our family tree (literally, on the family tree with domestic partners being added and name changes for transgender individuals being added as well). I am proud of my family for embracing my niece who came out as transgender at age 5 and I am encouraged about the changes I see happening in the world, although at times they can be slow. In their work, Greater Boston PFLAG has continued to touch the lives of thousands of individuals, families, schools and communities, helping LGBTQ people achieve happiness, acceptance, and self-esteem. I have worked along side GBPFLAG for more than 2 decades and I am honored to run the Boston Marathon for them this year. Please support me in raising money for this important and wonderful organization. Your support will directly impact the lives of many. THANK YOU!
